A BEGINNER QUESTION

What is blockchain and how does it work?

A blockchain is a shared digital ledger. Transactions are grouped into blocks, and each block is cryptographically linked to the one before it. Copies of the ledger are maintained by participants in a network, which makes past records difficult to alter without detection.

The basic steps

Participants submit transactions. The network checks them using its rules and records accepted transactions in a new block. A cryptographic link connects that block to earlier blocks, creating a traceable history. The exact rules differ among blockchain networks.

Blockchain is a technology, not a promise that every project built on it is useful, safe, or profitable. It supports many cryptocurrencies, but NIST also describes uses beyond cryptocurrency.
